The General Lecture of English Education Study Program FKIP Unsri was Held Successfully

On Saturday, 2nd April 2022, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) University of Sriwijaya (Unsri), held a General Lecture with the theme “Merdeka Curriculum of Junior and Senior High School Levels: Challenges and Opportunities” virtually through Zoom Meeting.

This event was attended by The Vice Dean for Academic of FKIP Unsri, Dr. Ismet, S.Pd., M.Si.; The Secretary of Language and Art Education Department, Erlina, S.Pd. M. Pd., M. Ed.; The Coordinator of English Education Study Program, Hariswan Putera Jaya, S.Pd., M.Pd; Dr. Dian Ekawati, M.Pd. as the speaker; Novalingga Pitaloka, S.Pd., M.Pd. as the Master of Ceremony; Dr. Machdalena Vianty, S. Pd., M.Ed., as the moderator; and more than 200 participants including lecturers, teachers, students, and public.

“This theme is still new and unfamiliar for some education elements,” said Hariswan Putera Jaya, S.Pd., M.Pd., in his opening remark.

As the representative of The Dean of FKIP Unsri, Dr. Ismet, S.Pd., M.Si. as the Vice Dean for Academic of FKIP Unsri delivered his opening remark, “From the issue we heard, there will be no wall between majors where students can choose their activity based on their own passion. For this, we would like to know more from our speaker today.”

After delivering his remark, he officially opened the event. Following this, The Master of Ceremony gave the event to the Moderator that introduced Dr. Dian Ekawati, M.Pd. as the speaker which is also an expert trainer of Sekolah Penggerak Widyaprada Ahli Madya LPMP South Sumatra. The speaker started the presentation to explain the Merdeka Curriculum for Middle School in Indonesia.

“Merdeka Curriculum aims to give a recovery from learning loss due to pandemic. School also can choose to use 2013 Curriculum, Merdeka Curriculum, or even formulate their own curriculum,” stated Dr. Dian Ekawati, M.Pd in her presentation. “However, Merdeka Curriculum is obligated for Sekolah Penggerak with five interventions from Government,” continued her.

The general lecture was continued with an explanation that the curriculum unit level education in the Merdeka curriculum was used as KOSP (Kurikulum Operasional Satuan Pendidikan). However, the administration or process is simpler than the previous one, but it is expected to develop learning modules or lesson plans.

She also added that the characteristics of the curriculum at every level are that Early Childhood Education (PAUD) emphasizes playing, elementary school children focus on achieving basic competencies and a holistic approach, Junior High Schools focus on Information and communication of Technology (ICT) adjustments, then English at the SMK level is not used as the common and so on.

At the end of her presentation, the speaker closed it with the conclusion that merdeka curriculum is an alternative or an option for learning recovery. Lastly, it was followed by several questions from participants which showed that the event was held interactively with the enthusiasm from the participants.
