Article Writing is a compulsory subject for the seventh semester students of English Education Study Program. It is designed to develop students’ ability in the academic article writing at an advanced level, specifically content and organization of a manuscript, concise communication through texts, review of research-based paper, recently used writing tools (Mendeley, plagiarism checker, online grammar checker), and strategy of paraphrasing and summarizing. At the end of the course, the students are expected to showcase their skills through the completion of a published Sinta 3 articles as an outcome.

Understanding how to write an article academically will undoubtedly benefit students in their thesis writing process, not only in undergraduate program but also future Master’s or doctoral program. The classroom model of case method, team-based project, and podcast introduce students to effective critical thinking, effective writing process, and self-discovery learning.

At the beginning of the semester, the students are introduced to the structure of the course for a semester, including rules and regulations, scoring system, general information about characteristics of good article, assignments, and more. Then, there will be some articles provided by the lecturers to be observed by the students. They need to identify whether the articles adhere to the “good characteristics of an article” outline in the rubric. The class will continue the discussion about the academic article structure.

To emphasize the case method model, the students’ previous essays are effectively employed in the third and fourth meetings. The class will be guided to find some structural mistakes in the paragraphs of their essays, both individually and in groups. Self-editing and peer-editing techniques are implemented in this case-based learning approach. It is expected that the students will be able to identify the article characteristics, compare two distinct texts, elucidate the structure of introduction part in article writing, and ultimately create their own introductions in article.

The class will consistently offer the students materials about research-based article, critical and innovative thinking, self-assessment strategies in writing, peer review, multimodal composition, unity & coherence, writing tools, and citations until the end of the semester. With this process, the students will then experience how to perform good article writing so that they will be able to reach. To specifically describe the PLOs, the learners are then guided to reach certain CLOs, which are:

  1. Able to comprehend the concept and characteristics in article writing;
  2. Able to apply theories, concepts, procedures, and structures in article writing;
  3. Able to implement citation strategies using updated technologies;
  4. Able to create multimodal composition and educational podcast;
  5. Able to evaluate and criticize articles accordance to self/peer assessment techniques in proofreading rubrics;
