English for Journalism is one of available elective courses. This course is designed for students who are interested in developing the skills needed for career in modern journalism. English for Journalism is aimed at introducing the students with print and digital media through readings and video lectures, while expanding vocabulary and increasing ability to read, research, and develop local and global news stories. Besides, in this course, students learn any types of journalism and writing rules. this course, the students will learn about history of journalism; important principles of making good journalism (i.e., grammar problems and confusion, spelling of journalistic, punctuation, and the use of direct and indirect speech); how to research, pitch and interview; words in print; write, edit and proofread the article draft; news broadcasting (namely, speaking skills for delivering news, writing script and read news report); and journalism in the digital age. For the ongoing processes, students will be assigned with individual and group work. 

Regarding the program learning outcome, this course is developed on the basis of the three main learning outcomes, namely, attitude, knowledge and skill. Students can show religious, responsible, and academic attitudes and behaviours that can contribute to improving the quality of life in society, nation and state. Students are expected to be able to master English according to the purpose and context of its use. For general skills, students are expected to have the skills to make the right decisions, professionally and responsibly based on the results of the analysis of information and data to be able to choose various alternative solutions independently and in groups in solving the learning problems they face in accordance with the context to obtain the best learning outcomes and optimal student development. For specific skills, students are able to use English properly, correctly and fluently according to the context of its use.

At the end of this course, students will be able to: 

  1. develop an understanding of the concept of essay writing;
  2. develop a more comprehensive understanding of various issues in a daily basis through written English;
  3. apply academic essay writing theory, concept, procedure, and structure;
  4. produce quotation strategy with technology tool correctly;
  5. evaluate and criticize essay by implementing self/peer review or evaluation in proofreading framework with correct rubric;
  6. create multimodal composition;
  7. communicate essay writing result through several medias to community related to expertise
