This course is aimed at providing students with the concepts of phonology and its related areas, like phonemics and phonetics, especially dealing with the English language. As a matter of fact, every language has its own phonology as it is one of the aspects of linguistics. This course discuss the sound system or pattern as well as the speech sounds of English especially American English as the textbook used written by American authors. Among the three kinds of phonetics, the one which is called Articulatory Phonetics is the main focus of the discussion in this course. Important terns including phonetics, phonemes, allophones, phonetic alphabet, phonemic and phonetic transcriptions, voiced vs voiceless sounds, distinctive vs nondistinctive sounds, phonological rules, etc. are discussed.
