This course is a comprehensive exploration of syntactical theory, designed to equip students with the fundamental terms and concepts necessary for the analysis of English sentence structure. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to a diverse range of topics. These include the identification and examination of various types of phrases, the understanding of clauses and their functions, the exploration of different sentence patterns, and the practical application of sentence diagramming. 

The specific topics covered during this course include the classifications of words into various parts of speech, an exploration of the functions words perform within sentences, the study of phrases with an emphasis on identifying their heads and complements, an in-depth look at sentence types, structures, and voices, a comprehensive understanding of different types of clauses and their functions, a breakdown of the components that constitute a sentence, an examination of sentence patterns, a detailed analysis of syntactical components such as grammatical categories and functions, the practical application of sentence diagramming through tree diagrams and fishbone diagrams, and an exploration of how syntax and semantics interrelate, particularly in terms of the semantic roles of subjects and objects. 

This course, through its extensive coverage of those topics, equips students with a solid foundation in syntactical theory and the skills to analyze the intricate structures of the English language. As stated on PLO–being able to show religious, responsible, and academic attitudes and behaviors that can contribute to improving the quality of life in society, nation and state; being able to choose various alternative solutions independently and in groups in solving the learning problems they face in accordance with the context to obtain the best learning outcomes and optimal student development; and being able to use English properly, correctly and fluently according to the context of its use–this course aims at helping students achieve these following Course Learning Outcomes.

  1. understand theories, concepts, principles, definitions of terms in English Syntax along with examples.
  2. identify various phrases, clauses, and sentences and provide their own examples in English.
  3. demonstrate independence, responsibility, and respect for the diversity of views and opinions of others .
  4. implement theories, concepts, principles and examples of different kinds of English Sentence Structures in learning English in particular and in education in general.
