Extensive Reading is the continuation of the three previous courses and the last stage of reading courses available. This course provides students with the opportunities to choose and read poems, fairytales, folktales, short stories for children, young adult literature, and creative non-fiction (e.g. memoir, biography). It is aimed at developing good reading habits, build up knowledge of vocabulary and structure, and encourage a liking of reading. It requires students to respond to what they have read and to carry out a variety of classroom activities in order to share with one another what they have learned from the reading materials. This course is also leading student to the positive attitude to get an access on various fiction and non-fictions texts extensively. Then, this course is aimed at increasing students’ language acquisition and other relevant knowledge that might be in line with their daily life. Importantly, Extensive Reading is designed to give the students an opportunity to develop the habit of reading extensively—that is, reading many books that they choose for themselves. This will help improve their reading fluency, increase their comprehension and expand their vocabulary.

Before the course starts, student will be taking a diagnostic reading test in the beginning of semester in order to know the strengths and weaknesses of the student when they are reading, to know students’ preferences and their previous reading experiences. For the ongoing processes, students will be assigned with individual, pair works or small group.

Based on the program learning outcome, students can show religious, responsible, and academic attitudes and behaviours that can contribute to improving the quality of life in society, nation and state. Students are expected to be able to master English according to the purpose and context of its use. For specific skills, students are able to use English properly, correctly and fluently according to the context of its use.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. develop an awareness and understanding of the concept of extensive reading;
  2. develop a more comprehensive understanding of various issues in a daily basis through extensive reading,
  3. develop an awareness of the importance of reading habit,
  4. have an ability to analyze and evaluate diverse types of texts in relevance with the objectives and its use.
  5. develop an awareness of the role of extensive reading in English language learning along with its role in research.
