This is a required course designed to develop students’ English listening skill at intermediate level. This course concentrates more on enabling students to comprehend implicit information in various types of spoken English texts. In addition to the listening skills learned in the previous course, the students are provided with the learning opportunities to develop and practice further skills of listening, i.e. recognizing cohesive devices, understanding accents, inferring meanings and relationships between ideas, and understanding stress and intonation.

This course begins with understanding Reduced Forms expressions from spoken text. The students, then, learn to understand the meaning of spoken English texts based on intonation. They also learn to understand idiom. In addition, Listening for Main Ideas, Supporting Ideas, and Details, and making inferences are also taught in this course. They will also be taught how to distinguish facts and opinion and take a note during listening to spoken texts. The activities in this course also include understanding contents of spoken English from podcast and songs. 

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to use technological tools to aid their learning such as e-learning unsri (LMS), Youtube, websites (such as BBC) interactive platforms (Quizzes, Nearpod, etc), and other necessary technological tools. 

Based on the programme learning outcome, students can show religious, responsible, and academic attitudes and behaviours that can contribute to improving the quality of life in society, nation and state (PLO1). In PLO3, students are expected to be able to master English according to the purpose and context of its use. For general skills, students are expected to have the skills to make the right decisions, professionally and responsibly based on the results of the analysis of information and data to be able to choose various alternative solutions independently and in groups in solving the learning problems they face in accordance with the context to obtain the best learning outcomes and optimal student developmen (PLO5)t. For specific skills, students are able to use English properly, correctly and fluently according to the context of its use (PLO6)

At the end of this course, students will be able to: 

  1. understand reduced forms expressions from spoken text. 
  2. understand the meaning of spoken text based on intonation. 
  3. understand the meaning of idioms from spoken texts. 
  4. understand main ideas, supporting ideas, and details from oral text content. 
  5. make inferences based on the contents of oral texts in the form of dialogues and lectures. 
  6. understand and distinguish facts and opinions from the content of spoken texts. 
  7. understand and practice note-taking from spoken text. 
  8. understand the content of spoken text in the form of podcasts. 
  9. understand the content of spoken text in the form of a song.
