This is a required course designed to enhance students’ comprehension of the theoretical foundations governing the implementation of English teaching and learning strategies as a foreign language. It covers a spectrum of essential dimensions, including cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects, providing a comprehensive understanding of language education. 

Throughout the course, students are introduced to a series of crucial topics. They are as follows:

  • A “Methodical” History of Language Teaching
  • Informed Approaches
  • Teaching by Principles
  • Intrinsic motivation in the classroom
  • Learner Variables: the principles in teaching English across age levels.
  • Learner Variable: Understand the principles of teaching English across proficiency levels
  • Initiating Interaction in the Classroom
  • Techniques, Textbook, and technology
  • How to Plan a Lesson
  • How to teach listening
  • Teaching Speaking
  • Principles in teaching reading
  • How to teach writing
  • Principles in form-focused instruction

Collaborative learning, flipped classroom, and project-based learning are the essential models used during the semester. Therefore, the classroom activities will be full of tasks, projects, discussions, and presentations. After carrying out all of the learning activities in this course, students are expected to achieve targeted PLOs–being able to show religious, responsible, and academic attitudes and behaviors that can contribute to improving the; being able to master English according to the purpose and context of its use; being able to master relevant and up-to-date information and communication technology in English learning and research quality of life in society, nation and state; being able to choose various alternative solutions independently and in groups in solving the learning problems they face in accordance with the context to obtain the best learning outcomes and optimal student development; being able to apply theories, concepts, and principles of English pedagogy well in planning, implementing, and evaluating English learning; and being able to use relevant and up-to-date information and communication technology in English language learning and research.

At the end, students will be able to:

  • understand theoretical basis on the implementation of English teaching and learning strategy as a foreign language.
  • identify principles of language teaching and learning of English as a foreign language.
  • discover factors in developing the students’ engagement in learning English as a foreign language.
  • elaborate strategies to develop ability in designing a lesson in teaching English as a foreign language.
