Master of Mathematics Education Sriwijaya University continues community service activities in collaboration with the Maitreya School Forum (FOSMI)

The Master of Mathematics Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University held Community Service (PPM) activities at the Palembang Maitreyawira school for the fourth time. This year’s event carries the theme “Critical Thinking in Learning”. Mentoring activities were planned to be conducted 3 times, on July 22, July 29, and August 5, 2022. On the first meeting, the activity was officially opened by representatives of FOSMI and remarks from Dr. Somakim as the representative of the study program coordinator.

Assistance activities were carried out in a hybrid manner through zoom conference meetings and in person. Participants were divided into 2 classes, namely elementary school teachers and junior high-high school-vocational school teachers.

In the group of elementary school teachers, the activity began with a presentation from Dr. Darmawijiyo about the development of learning media for the topic of fractions. Participants are invited to discuss terms that are often used for fractions in everyday life, such as half, as, there are even regional terms that are often used for the concept of fractions. The speaker not only provided theoretical explanations about the development of fractional media, but participants were invited to directly explore the fractional media that had been prepared. There is a board that contains several forms of fraction representation ranging from 1/2, 1/3,… to 1/10. The media is an alternative to learning fractions for elementary students to gain a meaningful understanding of the basic concepts of fractions. There were 6 groups consisting of 5 to 6 teachers who explored the fractional media. Elementary school teachers discuss in groups within 30 minutes. At the end of the meeting, Dr. Darmawijiyo provides reinforcement on the basic concepts of fractions through learning media in the form of the fraction board. The next activity is scheduled to be held on July 29, 2022 with the topic of fractional operations.

In another class, Dr. Somakim acted as resource person who brought the theme of philosophy and freedom to learn, as well as geometric thinking. He explained sequentially about the relationship between learning, philosophy, culture of thinking, and the demands of the 21st century, which is 4C (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication). On the concept of geometry, Dr. Somakim explained the meaning of point, circumference, area and the requirements to form a flat shape such as triangles and quadrilaterals. This activity is also equipped with group work in solving 3 problems. First, how to determine the center of the circle. Second, the difference in the shape of the flat and the area. Finally, the high-level problem is to determine the area of the building using the integral concept.

This activity will continue for the next 2 weeks, 29 July and 5 August 2022, with different speakers.
