Lecture Series Continues with Concept of Quadrilateral

Palembang, July 26, 2022

The Lecture Series, initiated by the Mathematics Education Laboratory, FKIP, Sriwijaya University, held another lecture series on quadrilateral. This theme will last for 2 weeks, where the second meeting will be held on August 2, 2022. The speaker on this meeting was Dr. Darmawijoyo and Dr. Budi Mulyono.

Dr. Darmawijoyo started the lecture by explaining the importance of reasoning activities to start the learning process. For example, in the plane material, students are initially faced with various irregular shapes to determine which is the larger chocolate or forest. Then it continues with the more commonly known forms. Finally, students are faced with the problem of determining the price of a product based on its shape. At this stage, students are expected to be able to interpret the concept of flat shape through problem solving related to the context of the price of goods.

The activity continued with Dr. Budi Mulyono related misconceptions that often occur in learning mathematics in class. The speaker used ICT media, Geogebra, in straightening out these misconceptions. Many questions came from participants related to the properties of quadrilaterals, the relationship between one shape and another, and unusual quadrilateral shapes. He also reminded that participants were given additional tasks to identify the misconceptions encountered in learning mathematics, especially the quadrilateral material and determine solutions to minimize or even eliminate these misconceptions before the next meeting. The activity will be continued for 7 more meetings with different speakers.
