Community Service Program to Improve Teachers’ Literacy

Lecturers and students of the English Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Sriwijaya University (UNSRI) carry out a productive scheme of community service that aims to improve the professional literacy competence of teachers in Kindergarten, Elementary, and Junior High Schools Global Talent Islamic School and Studio Palembang with the theme “Cross-Subject Literacy Learning through Reading & Writing Workshop”.

This service activity was chaired by Sary Silvhiany, M.Pd., MA., PhD, accompanied by lecturers of English Education Study Program, Erlina, M.Pd., M.Ed., Fiftinova, S.S., M.Pd and Dedi Kurniawan, S.Pd., M.Pd., alumni of the English Education Study Program, Riski Aginia Hafizha, S.Pd., M.Pd, and assisted by 10 undergraduate students of English education study program.

The head of the event organizer, Sary Silvhiany, MPd MA, Ph.D., said that strengthening the professional competence of teacher literacy is an important part in improving the quality of literacy learning in schools. This will lead to an increase in students’ literacy competence.

“This service activity is scheduled to start from July to October 2022, which consists of workshops (training) and mentoring,” said Sary when confirmed, Friday (19/8).

Broadly speaking, continued Sary, the activities include explaining the framework of teacher competence, providing access to reading, modeling, presenting material, and mentoring teachers. The presentation of the material is divided into four sessions.

“Introduction to Literacy Learning based on Reading & Writing Workshop in Cross-Subject Literacy”

Described by Sary Silvhiany, M.Pd., M.A., PhD, who is also a member of the expert team and literacy resource at the Directorate of Teachers and Education Personnel, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. 0340/B/HK.01.03/2022 regarding the literacy and numeracy competency framework for elementary school teachers. This session activity also introduces various sources of children’s story books that can be integrated into learning in the field of study.

“The second session with the theme of searching, accessing, and finding Expressed Information in Text,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Riski Aginia Hafizha, SPd, MPd added, for the third session, namely Teaching Expository Text through Reading & Writing Connection, and the fourth session of Modelling Minilesson on Teaching Expository Text. Furthermore, Erlina, MPd, MEd, and Fiftinova, SS MPd explained that modeling is done using fiction books such as, Aku Suka Caramu, Dunia Tanpa Roda, Sama atau Berbeda, dan Mantel Emas.

“The final series of this event is mentoring teachers to find appropriate reading books and integrate them into learning according to the lesson plan (RPP),” she explained.

She further said that this was welcomed positively and enthusiastically from the teacher. Because, in implementing it in the future, it will also be implemented in classes starting from Kindergarten, Elementary, and Junior High School, Global Talent Islamic School and Studio. In later implementation, undergraduate students of English education study program who are involved in this service activity will make observations in class and some will carry out thesis research activities at this school.

“Lecturers will accompany and hold focused discussions with teachers in the next activity,” she concluded.
