GIP5101 Philosophy of Science (2 credits)

This course discusses the nature of science from the point of view of ontology, epistemology, and axiology. The philosophy of science learning experience aims to shape students’ insights and abilities so that they can play a role in educational science and technology development activities. The topics of discussion include the basics of science knowledge, scientific framework of thinking, criteria for truth, the nature of language, mathematics, and statistics as a means of scientific thinking, the ethos of science, and the development of science and technology and their influence on the values ​​of culture and the life of the nation. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG5102 Language Acquisition and Communication Theories (2 credits)

This course discusses history, research methods, environment, capacity and representation, and the process of language acquisition as well as communication theory as part of language acquisition through exposure to topics by individual students and followed by a class discussion forum guided by lecturers. Evaluation is carried out through a presentation assessment rubric that focuses on the suitability of the material presented by students with the assigned topic. The final result expected from this course is students’ understanding of the material or topics that have been discussed together in the form of draft papers/essays that they can present in scientific forums such as seminars or publications in Sinta-accredited scientific journals.

GIG5103 Instructional Design Development (3 credits)

This course discusses important topics regarding the development of instructional design, namely: determining instructional objectives, instructional analysis ( skill analysis ), analysis of learning settings and contexts, formulation of performance objectives, development of assessment tools, development of learning strategies, development and selection of teaching materials, implementation of formative evaluation, revision of learning, and summative assessment. Activities carried out by students during lectures are in the form of discussions, structured assignments, and independent assignments according to the distribution of topics for each meeting. This course is carried out by students presenting papers, discussions and assignments according to the topics in the course. In addition to assignments per topic, students are also required to take the Mid-Semester Examination (UTS) and the Final Semester Examination (UAS). The resulting product is a design for learning language and literature in lower and secondary education by following the development procedure suggested by Dick, Carey, and Carey.   

GIG5104 Teaching Material Development (3 credits)

This course discusses the principles, procedures, criteria, selection, development models of teaching materials in language and literature learning. In addition to conceptual mastery, students are also expected to practice applying these concepts so that realized a product of teaching materials. To increase knowledge, students are also required to evaluate teaching materials that have existed so far. To achieve this goal, student activities are evaluating teaching materials in the form of discussion forums, presentations, and workshops that are applied through discovery learning, collaborative learning. problem-based learning, and project/assignment-based learning. The evaluation was done by giving quizzes, presentations, write papers, found gaps between the concepts, theories, procedures, and products of prior and present teaching materials. The product of this course is in the form of conceptual papers and drafts of new teaching materials that can be used in language learning

GIG5105 Critical Issues in Education* (2 credits)

This course discusses important issues in the field of education, such as the study of the curriculum in Indonesia, 21st century learning with its reality, creative teachers in utilizing contemporary technology and learning media in overcoming teacher problems and student learning outcomes, developing higher-order thinking structures ( HOTs), global citizenship in education, inclusive education, and current issues related to Education. The learning process applies Flipped learning. Students read and understand the selected topics/issues in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with written tests, individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers. At the end of the lecture, students are expected to produce draft products for individual/group articles that will be published in national indexed scientific journals.

GIG5106 Translation in Language Learning and Literature* (2 credits)

This course discusses the concepts, theories, approaches, and strategies for translating a text from one language to another, for example Indonesian to English and vice versa. Through this activity, students are expected to be proficient in translating or translating English language learning texts and literature into Indonesian, and vice versa. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; student and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG5107 Malay Literature* (2 credits)

This course discusses Malay literature through the introduction of various Malay literary works which include the concept of Malay literature, characteristics of Malay literature, Malay literary texts, Malay literary genres, benefits of Malay literature, schools in Malay literature, and Malay literary criticism. The methods used in learning are discussions, assignments and case studies. Evaluation is given through written tests, presentations, and assignment reports. The products produced in this course are papers/articles and assignment reports in written form/video recordings that are useful for learning Malay literature. 

GIP5208 Educational Statistics (2 credits)

This course is intended to equip students with an understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics in educational research as well as the ability to analyze statistical data using statistical software, such as Excel, SPSS, SAS, Minitab. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG5209 Contemporary Methods of TEFL (2 credits)

This course discusses contemporary learning models that include various approaches, methods, strategies, or contemporary English/Indonesian teaching/learning techniques for secondary schools which include communicative language teaching, competency-based language teaching, content-based instruction, cooperative learning. , task-based approach, project-based approach, lexical approach, multiple intelligences, flipped classroom, gamification, problem-based learning, design thinking, thinking-based learning, etc. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers discuss to better understand the topics discussed in class. Evaluation of learning through oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG5210 Language Teaching and Learning Evaluation (3 credits)

This course discusses theories of language learning and learning, evaluation of language skills in general and English in particular, the development of various language proficiency tests, good test indicators, and the intricacies of assessment related to language skills and aspects. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG5211 Research Methods and Ethics and Scientific Publication (3 credits)

This course provides a learning experience for students to study, write reports and research results in the fields of English/Indonesian language and literature, ethics in conducting research and scientific publications. This course discusses the subject matter of the principles and procedures of language and literature research, fields of research on language and literature, data collection and analysis techniques, preparation of research proposals, and preparation of research reports, ethics in conducting research and scientific publications. Learning evaluation is carried out in the form of individual assignments by analyzing at least 20 research articles related to topics of interest and individual assignments in designing a final research proposal (thesis). The final product of this course is that students produce a draft research proposal for their final project (thesis).

GIG5212 Educational Leadership and Management* (2 credits)

This course discusses theories on leadership, leadership styles, leadership and management, concepts about education, educational leadership and management, the role and duties of school principals as leaders of educational organizations and actual cases related to educational leadership and management. To understand theories and concepts, students read various references and write papers and conduct simple research on leadership and management carried out in schools by looking at the actual conditions in their respective schools and presented in class. The methods used in learning are discussions, assignments, case studies. Evaluation is given through written tests, presentations, and assignment reports. The products produced in this course are papers, articles and simple research reports on leadership and education management.

GIG5213 Teaching of Indonesian to the Speakers of other Languages* (2 credits)

This course discusses the basic principles of BIPA teaching: syllabus, teaching materials (language knowledge, language skills, and Indonesian issues), characteristics and levels of BIPA learners, approaches/methods/techniques, learning media, and evaluation of BIPA learning, as well as concept implementation. -Basic concepts of BIPA teaching in the form of practical-empirical experiences, both in real situations and in imitation (simulations). To understand the basic principles, students read various references and write papers and conduct simple research on BIPA teaching, preparing BIPA learning RPS in the form of real or simulated learning. Learning methods in the form of discussions, assignments and case studies. Evaluation is given through written tests, presentations, and assignment reports. The products produced in this course are papers/articles and assignment reports in the form of video recordings of BIPA learning simulations.

GIG5214 Appreciation and Literature Teaching* (2 credits)

This course discusses and provides students with experience in studying literary works in their learning through various approaches and theories. The theories discussed include: structuralism, stylistics, semiotics, reader response, intertextuality, literary ecology, and feminist literary criticism. These theories are associated with applications in the study of literary works and their application in the process of learning literature. Activities carried out by students during lectures are in the form of discussions, structured assignments, and independent assignments according to the distribution of topics for each meeting. This course is carried out by students presenting papers, discussions and assignments according to the topics in the course. In addition to assignments per topic, students are also required to take the Mid-Semester Examination (UTS) and the Final Semester Examination (UAS). The resulting product is a learning device with selected literary theory.     

GIG6115 Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics (3 credits)

This course discusses important topics about English/Indonesian discourse, such as understanding and types of discourse, discourse topics, cohesion and coherence, speech acts, presuppositions, implicatures, oral and written discourse analysis, and critical discourse analysis. Flipped learning is used in the learning process. Students read and understand the topics in the syllabus before they enter class; students and lecturers only discuss to better understand the topic of discussion in class meetings. Learning evaluation is carried out with oral and/or written tests, and individual and/or group assignments in the form of papers.

GIG6116 Independent Study (3 credits)

This course provides an opportunity for students to work under the guidance/supervision of a lecturer in exploring ideas that contribute to research or developing a project that can support their research plans. This independent study can also be in the form of studying the analysis of specific methodologies that have not been discussed in depth in research methodology courses, and the process of writing them for publication. In this course, students are asked to submit a one- or two-page written proposal to the lecturer in the first week that refers to the scope of assignments, assignment activities, number of meetings, completion date, and the resulting product. At the end of the lecture, students produce products that have been planned at the beginning of the semester. Products can be conceptual papers, methodological analyzes, and/or draft articles for publication.

GIG6017 Thesis (6 credits)

This course discusses the planning and implementation of research on a problem in the student’s field of specialization, as well as writing a report in the form of a thesis under the direction and assessment of the appointed supervisor. Each student is guided by two thesis supervisors, the main supervisor and the assistant supervisor. The mentoring process consists of several stages, namely the determination of the research topic/title, writing a research proposal, determining the measuring instrument for research data collection, collecting research data, analyzing research data, and writing a research report in the form of a thesis. Included in this activity is the obligation to submit research results in a thesis examination forum which is attended by thesis supervisors and thesis examiners. The mentoring method is in the form of providing feedback and suggestions on the progress of each stage carried out by students in planning, implementing, and writing a draft research report/thesis. The products produced from this course are in the form of a thesis draft that is ready to be tested before the board of examiners and scientific articles to be published in Sinta-accredited scientific journals.
