Students should be equipped with 21st century abilities, including literacy. Students are even required to take a Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM) or Minimum Competency Assessment as part of the Merdeka curriculum to assess their reading and numeracy (mathematics literacy). The goal of the Mathematical Literacy Contest was to assess students’ mathematical literacy (numeracy) skills. Additionally, teachers received training on PISA, which included information about Indonesia’s PISA rankings since 2012, where to find references, how to access international PISA questions, and how to develop PISA questions. The registration process and schedule for the eleventh Mathematical Literacy Contest and PISA Workshop on 2023 are detailed in the poster that follows.
On October 31, 2023, a hybrid version of this activity was conducted in the FKIP Ogan meeting hall. This activity starts at 08.00 a.m. (GMT + 7) is the opening event of literacy contest of the FKIP Sriwijaya University, which consists of the eleventh Mathematics Literacy Contest, the eighth Science Literacy Contest, and the third Language Literacy Contest. The event was attended by the Dean of Sriwijaya University Dr. Hartono, MA, Deputy Dean for General Administration and Finance Dra. Nyimas Aisyah, Ph.D., Deputy dean for student affairs Dr. Ismet, M.Si., Chair of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education Department, Dr. Ketang Wiyono, M.Pd., Secretary of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education Department Kodri Madang, M.Pd., Ph.D, Study program coordinators at the FKIP Sriwijaya University, and lecturers at the FKIP Sriwijaya University. The Dean of FKIP Sriwijaya University personally started the activity, stating that literacy and numeracy abilities are critical for students to be competitive in the international. Critical reasoning skills will result from literacy and numeracy. In social situations, critical thinking can be helpful in problem-solving and information interpretation. Documentation was completed by the dean, committee, presenters, and each participant when the session was opened and statements were made to welcome everyone.
The FKIP Sriwijaya University’s mathematics education cluster is hosting the Eleventh Mathematics Literacy Contest and PISA Workshop. Elika Kurniadi, S.Pd., M.Sc. a lecturer in the mathematics education cluster, is the contest chief organizer. Keynote speakers with expertise in both PISA and mathematical modeling in Indonesia are also included in the PISA workshop event on 2023. These individuals are professors in the FKIP Sriwijaya University’s Mathematics Education Cluster and include Prof. Dr. Zulkardi, M.I. Komp., M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Ratu Ilma Indra Putri, M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hartono.
The PISA workshop was facilitated by Zuli Nuraeni, M.Pd. and ran from 08.30 a.m. to 12.00 a.m., with a break for lunch, and started again from 1.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. The three speakers gave training: Prof. Dr. Zulkardi, M.I. Komp., M.Sc., gave material about the development of PISA in Indonesia and its history. Prof. Dr. Ratu Ilma Indra Putri, M.Si., gave material on how to design PISA questions and references to PISA questions, and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hartono gave material on answering PISA questions through mathematical modeling. The 191 workshop attendees were ecstatic to be there. They were instructed to create PISA questions during the intermission and present them in the following session after receiving input from the keynote speaker.
Meanwhile, in another room, the eleventh Mathematics Literacy Contest was also held, as many as 49 participants from various regions and provinces throughout Indonesia participated, both middle and high school students who met the requirements. The schools participating in the mathematics literacy contest come from the provinces of South Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu and Riau. There are 3 rounds in this mathematics literacy contest, namely: preliminary round, semifinal round, and final round. A total of 49 participants took part in the preliminary round, the answers and highest scores were selected to enter the semifinal round. A total of 21 participants successfully entered the semifinal round, using a time and ranking system as well as the results of the best answers. There were 4 participants who entered the final round, the questions for this final round only consisted of 3 essay questions, participants were asked to write their answers and then collect them.
The jury chaired directly by Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hartono reviewed each student’s answer to give a score. Before announcing the winner of this final round, participants were asked to present the results of their answers. After presenting the answers, the jury discussed to determine the winner. The winners of the eleventh mathematics literacy contest are:
• 1st place, Angel Susanto, SMPK Brother Xaverius 1 Palembang
• 2nd place, Cornelius Evan Salim, Kusuma Bangsa High School
