Community Service (PKM) is a process of implementing science, technology, and cultural arts directly to the community using scientific methodology as a dissemination of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. PKM can be interpreted as a process of implementing or applying technology and knowledge owned by lecturers to the community.
Thursday, September 26, 2024, the PKM Team of Mathematics Education Study Program of FKIP Unsri chaired by Prof. Dr. Ratu Ilma Indra Putri, M.Si. and Prof. Dr. Zulkardi, M.I.Komp., M.Sc. carried out PkM for Junior High School Mathematics MGMP Teachers in Prabumulih City with the title “Training and Assistance in Strengthening Social Mathematics Norms and Numeracy through PMRI Learning Communities for Junior High School Teachers”. This PkM activity is also an integrated PkM involving undergraduate and doctoral program students, who provide training and mentoring materials to MGMP Mathematics SMP Prabumulih City to support the numeracy skills of junior high school students.
The opening remarks were delivered by the representative of the Prabumulih City Junior High School Mathematics MGMP Mrs. Rusnita, S.Pd., M.Pd. who expressed her gratitude to the PkM Team of the Mathematics Education Study Program of FKIP Sriwijaya University for choosing the Prabumulih City MGMP as a collaborator in PkM activities. She also said that the Junior High School Mathematics MGMP already has a Learning Community (Kombel) consisting of intra-school Kombel and inter-school Kombel, which is contained in the Prabumulih City MGMP.
The next speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ratu Ilma Indra Putri, M.Si. as the chairman and representative of the PkM Team. She stated that this activity is important for mathematics teachers to participate in, in strengthening social mathematics norms in the classroom and supporting numeracy learning by designing learning and Numeracy activity activities. In addition, she also said that there are doctoral program students who will provide material related to numeracy as an implementation of integrated PkM.
The PkM event was opened by the Head of Prabumulih City Education Office, represented by Mrs. Mardiana D, S.Si., M.Si as the head of MGMP. She stated that this PkM activity is expected to provide insight to the Prabumulih City Junior High School Mathematics MGMP and can improve the students’ Mathematics AKM scores which in the past few years had decreased. With this PkM activity, it is hoped that the knowledge from the training and mentoring provided to the SMP Mathematics MGMP can make Mathematics Teachers gain knowledge related to numeracy to stabilize or improve students’ AKM mathematics scores.
Mathematical social norms are important in learning mathematics is important to know the process and explanation of mathematics, enter in mathematical thinking. Mathematical norms should be carried out at all times in mathematics learning. She showed a video simulation of the teacher before being given material related to social norms in mathematics learning, the teacher explained directly and there was no interaction with the whole class. After providing assistance and training to the teacher, the second video was shown, where the teacher invited all students to express their opinions on their mathematical knowledge related to acute angles. The difference in the way of teaching and interaction between teachers and students, students and students is very visible.
The presenter gave the workshop teachers to discuss with the group in designing learning and applying socio-mathematical norms in the learning. After the discussion, the teacher representative simulated to all workshop participants. She is Mrs. Sobriyanti, S.Pd. from SMP Yayasan Pertamina (YPS). Feedback from Prof. Dr. Ratu Ilma Indra Putri, M.Si., is that it is necessary to continue the application of social mathematics norms in the classroom. Although it is not easy, it must still be implemented.
Arika explores a wide variety of songket motifs in South Sumatra, summarizing their cultural origins, mathematical geometry, and geometric transformations.
This mentoring and training activity will last until November for 32 JP synchronously and asynchronously. This activity is expected to have a positive impact on MGMP Mathematics teachers at the junior high school level in Prabumulih City to be able to use sociomathematical norms in the classroom and design mathematics learning activities that can support students’ numeracy skills.
